GENERAL RULES OF THE SHOW



1. Authority. This show will be governed by the standard rules and regulations of the American Rose Society ("ARS"). Any questions regarding the Rose Show, not covered by ARS standards, will be resolved by the Rose Show Chairman.



2. Exhibitors. All exhibitors must be registered for this convention. Exhibitors may submit entries only from their own private, outdoor rose garden, except as designated in the Artistic Division. Two people who jointly maintain a garden may exhibit jointly but not individually from the same garden in the same class.

The Novice classes (Horticulture 39 and 40) are open only to exhibitors who have never won a First Place ribbon in an accredited ARS rose show.

Judges working in this show may exhibit in Judges' Challenge Classes 15 and 28. Arrangement judges may exhibit in Challenge Classes 69 and 70.



3. Entry Tags. Each entry must be accompanied by an appropriate ARS entry tag provided by the Rose Show Committee. All parts of the entry tag must be completed, including the Exhibitor's Number. The Exhibitor's Number will be their registration number.



4. Rose Classification. Except for entries in the Hybridizer Challenge Class, roses entered in this show must be listed in a recent edition of one of the following publications: ARS Modern Roses, ARS Magazine, ARS Official List of Exhibition Names for Judges & Exhibitors, ARS 2003 Handbook for Selecting Roses, 2003 Combined Rose List. The responsibility for proper identification and classification lies totally with the exhibitor.



5. Hours. Preparation, Challenge Class and Artistic Placement areas will open at 5:00 a.m. Entries will be accepted from 7:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. ONLY. Entries will close promptly at 9:30 a.m. so that the show may be prepared for judging at 10:00 a.m.



6. Placement. All horticulture specimens will be placed in the show area by the Placement Committee. Only exhibitors placing arrangements or horticulture challenge class entries are permitted in the show area during entry. Exhibitors must leave the show area immediately after their entry is in place to their satisfaction. Exhibitors placing entries in the horticulture challenge classes should remain in the preparation area until 9:30 a.m. in the event that their entry has to be moved.



7.. Judging. Judging will be in accordance with the appropriate ARS publications. In the horticulture classes, each variety shall be judged as a separate class. During judging, only judges, clerks and Show Committee personnel are permitted in the show area. The decisions of the judges are final.



8. South Central District Trophies. SCD Trophies will be awarded only to First Place Winners. Exhibitors winning SCD McFarland and Moore trophies must sign a register for trophies and must arrange to return them to the District Awards Chairman prior to the next District Rose Show.



9. Refrigerated Storage. Refrigeration will be provided. Roses may be checked in on Friday from 4:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. and may be picked up Saturday morning between 5:00 a.m. and 7:00 a.m. Neither the Houston Rose Society, the South Central District nor the Holiday Inn will be responsible for any losses or damages.



10. Dismantling. No entry, ribbon or award may be removed from the show area before the close of the show, 9:45 p.m. on Saturday except by direction of the Rose Show Chairman. All roses entered in the horticulture classes become the property of the Houston Rose Society. Arrangers may dismantle their artistic entries between 9:45 p.m. and 10:30 p.m. on Saturday.



11. Awards Pick-Up. All awards will be packaged and distributed by the Show Committee personnel. Exhibitors may pick up their awards and trophies between 9:45 p.m. and 10:30 p.m. on Saturday. Exhibitors are responsible for claiming their awards and trophies in person or by their designated representative.



12. Disclaimer. Your participation as an exhibitor is welcome and encouraged. All care will be given to safeguard your exhibits. Neither the Houston Rose Society, the SCD, the American Rose Society nor the Holiday Inn will be responsible for loss of, damage to entries or property, nor for injuries to persons not resulting from the direct act of their respective agents. Liability of any nature is hereby disclaimed.



HORTICULTURE RULES



1. Containers. Uniform containers for cut specimens will be furnished by the Show Committee for all horticulture challenge classes with the exception of the Old Garden Rose Bouquet.



2. Wedging Material. Only aluminum foil or styrofoam wedges provided by the exhibitor, may be used to position a stem in a single specimen container. Material should not extend above the top of the container.



3. Challenge Class Entry Tag. The challenge class entry tag should be used for a collection of multiple varieties displayed in a single container or box, with all the varieties listed on the same tag. For collections in multiple separate containers, each container must be labeled with an individual entry tag.



4. Challenge Class Placement. Challenge class collections must be placed by the exhibitor. Exhibitors entering challenge classes should remain in the preparation area until 9:30 a.m in the event their entry has to be moved.



5. Challenge Class Entry. Only one entry is allowed per exhibitor in each challenge class with the exception of the Hybridizer Challenge Class. Exhibitors in Classes 1 and 17 must reside in South Central District.



6. Staging. Classes 1 through 16 will be staged on low tables. All other classes will be staged on tables of standard height.



7. Judging. Specimens will be judged based on the following scale of points:

Form 25 Stem & Foliage 20

Color 20 Balance & Proportion 10

Substance 15 Size 10



8. Sweepstakes, Large Roses. A keeper trophy will be awarded to the exhibitor winning the most First Place ribbons in Classes 1 - 16, and 29-39. In the event of a tie, Second Place ribbons will be considered. Keeper trophy sponsored by the Houston Rose Society.



9. Sweepstakes, Miniature Roses. A keeper trophy will be awarded to the exhibitor winning the most First Place ribbons in Classes 17 - 28 and 40-44. In the event of a tie, Second Place ribbons will be considered. Keeper trophy sponsored by the Houston Rose Society.

Class 7 - Shrub Rose Trio

GENERAL RULES



1. Eligibility. Anyone registered for the convention may enter arrangements in the show. Challenge classes have eligibility requirements, as stated for each class. Advice may be solicited, but all exhibits must be the sole work of the exhibitor - no other person may help with assembly of an exhibit or alter an exhibitor's entry Dried designs must have been created uniquely for this show.



2. Pre-Registration. Only one entry per exhibitor is permitted in each class. All exhibitors, including judges, must pre-register their arrangement entries by noon on Thursday, October 23, 2003, by contacting Robin Hough, 281/482-8944 or by e-mail at rzhough@earthlink.net.



3. Standard Staging. Standard designs will be staged on tables draped with white cloth with a tan background. Exhibitor may provide their own free-standing background as an integral component of the design. There are no height limitations for standard classes, however, the entire exhibit may not exceed 24 inches in width or depth. Exhibitors may reserve a Foam-Core niche on a first-come / first reserved basis.



4. Miniature Staging. Miniature designs will be staged at "eye-level", approximately 18 inches above standard table height, on a white cloth with a tan background. Exhibitor may provide their own free-standing background as an integral component of the design; however, the entire exhibit may not exceed 10 inches in height, width or depth. Exhibitors may reserve a Foam-Core niche on a first-come / first reserved basis



5. Roses. Roses must provide the dominant floral interest in all designs and must be outdoor garden grown. All rose blooms and buds showing color must be correctly identified on the entry tag, for both fresh and dried designs. Only roses classified as miniature roses or mini-flora roses may be used in miniature designs; however, roses of all classifications may be used in standard designs. Arranger-grown roses are optional for all classes. If all of the roses in an arrangement have been grown by the arranger, then "AG" must be written in the upper right-hand corner of the entry tag for the entry to be eligible for the ARS medal certificates.



6. Other Design Components including fresh, dried or treated plant materials, bases, frames, free-standing backgrounds, accessories and other man-made components may be used except as excluded by the class description. Exhibitor may also provide a 3x5 inch card of intent to explain his/her design concept. Components not allowed in this show are artificial plant materials, fresh plant materials that have been pained or dyed, living creatures, electrical devices and the American flag or reproductions of it.



7. Placement. Exhibitors must use the exhibit space assigned to them. Backgrounds may be placed in assigned spaces on Friday evening from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Arrangements may be placed in assigned spaces on Saturday morning from 5:00 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. Arrangements should be assembled outside the show area, with only final placement of components occurring in the assigned exhibit space. Exhibitors must remove their work material and leave the show area promptly when entries close.



8. Removal. Arrangements must remain in place until the close of the show.



9. Judging will be in accordance with the current ARS "Guidelines for Judging Rose Arrangements". The ARS arrangements scorecard will be used to evaluate all entries as follows:

A design must score at least 90 points to be eligible for a First Place ribbon. Only one First, Second and Third Place ribbon may be awarded in each class.



10. Awards. A keeper trophy will be awarded to the First Place entry in each class. A design must place First and must show at least 92 points to be eligible for ARS high awards (rosettes and certificates). Judges must resolve point-scoring ties and awards may be withheld if no entry is worthy of the award. Judges' decisions are final. In addition to section-specific awards, the following may be awarded:



One set of ARS Mini-Gold, Mini-Silver and Mini-Bronze Medal Arrangement Certificates for the highest-scoring First Place designs using fresh arranger-grown roses, from miniature arrangement classes.



One set of ARS Gold, Silver and Bronze Medal Arrangement certificates for the highest-scoring First Place designs using fresh arranger-grown roses, from the standard arrangement classes.



An ARS Sweepstakes Certificate and keeper trophy, determined by total number of First Place ribbons from all arrangement classes. In case of a tie, Second Place ribbons will be considered, then Third Place ribbons if necessary. Sweepstakes keeper trophy sponsored by the Houston Rose Society.



11. Security Exhibitors should mark containers and accessories where it cannot be seen during judging. All reasonable care will be taken to safeguard exhibits, but neither the HRS, the SCD, the ARS, nor the Holiday Inn assumes any responsibility for loss or damage. Liability of any nature is hereby disclaimed.



12. Challenge Class Entries. Only one entry is allowed per exhibitor in each Challenge Class. Exhibitors in Classes 45 - 47 must reside in the South Central District.

A standard dried arrangement using only dried roses with dried and/or treated plant materials. Designer's choice of style must be stated on entry tag. Eligible for ARS Keepsake Award.



Class 68 - Dallas Market Center

A hanging or free-standing craft item using dried roses with dried and/or treated plant materials. Accessories and ribbon may also be used. Eligible for ARS Rosecraft Award.







JUDGES' CHALLENGE CLASSES



Class 69 - Fort Sam Houston / Judges' Challenge

A Miniature arrangement, designer's choice of style must be stated on entry tag, using fresh Miniature or Mini-Flora roses.



Class 70 - Caverns of Sonora / Judges' Challenge

A standard arrangement, designer's choice of style must be stated on entry tag, using fresh roses of any classification.

Each class is eligible for an ARS Best Judges'

Entry Award Certificate. Only judges

working in this show may enter these classes.

DIVISION III - PHOTOGRAPHY



GENERAL RULES



1. This division is open to AMATEUR photographers only (no limit on the number of entries per exhibitor).



2. Prints having won awards in any other photographic print competition are ineligible.



3. Entries are by Pre-Registration Only no later than Thursday, October 23, 2003 with Patti Lawlor, 281/343-9472 or by e-mail to d.plawlor@pdq.net.



4. Color photographs are to be exhibited without mats or frames and should be 4x6 inches or 5x7 inches in size. They will be displayed in holders supplied by the Houston Rose Society. The exhibitor's name and address should be on the back of each photograph. Placement will be made by the Photography Chair.



5. An American Rose Society entry tag should be completed in the same manner as for any other exhibit. For public interest, name the variety of roses, if known.



6. Each entry will be judged on the merits of that photographer's subject, composition and photographic excellence. One blue ribbon will be awarded in each class.



7. All care will be given to safeguard photographs, but neither the Houston Rose Society, the South Central District or the Holiday Inn will be responsible for the loss of or damage to photographs.



8. Photographs, ribbons and awards may be picked up at the close of the show between 9:45 p.m. and 10:30 p.m. on Saturday.
