2002 Grand Prix Show Schedule

2002 HOUSTON ROSE SOCIETY ROSE GRAND PRIX

All members are encouraged to participate in the Gran Prix competition at each meeting during the growing season. The purpose is to help new growers and exhibitors gain confidence and experience in exhibiting roses.
Judging is by ARS Judging standards. No more than 10 total entries per exhibitor, with no two specimens the same is allowed in any one class. ARS entry tags will be furnished. All entries must be correctly named and exhibited in standard rose society vases. Preparation area opens at 6:30 PM. All entries must be in by 7:30 PM.
Roses must be placed in alphabetical order on exhibit tables for each general class. Since each variety constitutes a subclass, a rose or roses in each separate subclass will be judged against the standards and merits of that variety.

SHOW SCHEDULE

Class 1 HYBRID TEAS OR GRANDIFLORAS and their climbing counterparts, one bloom per stem, without side bud(s).

Class 2 FLORIBUNDAS OR POLYANTHAS, one bloom or multiple blooms (3 or more) per stem.

Class 3 FULLY- OPEN HYBRID TEAS OR GRANDIFLORAS, one bloom per stem without side bud(s). Stamens must show.

Class 4 MINIATURE ROSES, bush and climbing types, one bloom per stem without side bud(s). Exhibition Form.

Class 5 MINIATURE ROSES SPRAYS, bush and climbing types, multiple blooms (3 or more) per stem.

Class 6 FULLY- OPEN MINIATURE ROSES, one bloom per stem without side bud(s). Stamens must show.

Class 7 OLD GARDEN ROSES AND SHRUB ROSES, all types, naturally grown, one bloom or multiple blooms per stem. May be disbudded. Date of introduction, if known, should be shown in upper right corner of entry tag.

Class 8 ANY OTHER ROSES, Seedlings, climbers, etc.

Class 9 NOVICE CLASS, Same as classes 1-8 above, specify novice. Exhibitors in novice class after winning a BLUE RIBBON must move to regular class & their score will count toward Best Novice and toward Gran Prix awards.

Class 10 CHALLENGE CLASS OF THE MONTH (Identify roses on entry tag).

April:
Old Garden Rose Bouquet, 5 or more stems of one bloom or multiple blooms, in a container furnished by the exhibitor

May:
Floribunda Bouquet, 5 or more stems (one bloom per stem or sprays), any variety or combination of varieties displayed in a container furnished by the exhibitor

June:
Matched Pair, 2 Hybrid Teas, GRANDIFLORAS, FLORIBUNDAS, or Miniatures of the same variety, with no side buds, displayed in separate containers.

July:
No Grand Prix this month.

August:
Arrangement: A Standard or Miniature arrangement. Names of roses and type of arrangement ( Line, Mass, Abstract, Moribana, etc.) must be on entry tag.

September:
Stages of Bloom, 3 Hybrid Teas, Grandifloras, Floribundas, or Miniatures of the same variety showing the three stages of development. Displayed in separate containers.

October:
Hybrid Tea/Grandiflora Bouquet, 7 or more roses, any variety or combination of varieties, one bloom per stem, no side bud(s), in container furnished by exhibitor.

November:
Miniature Bouquet, 12 mini roses, any variety or combination of varieties, one bloom per stem, no side bud(s), in container furnished by exhibitor.

Points are given for winning major awards (a score sheet is maintained for each exhibitor), and are tallied at the end of the Gran Prix season. Points are given as follows: 1st place- 3 pts, 2nd place- 2 Pts, 3rd place- 1 pt; additional points for Queen- 5 Pts, Best of Class 2 pts, Court of Honor- 1 pt, Arrangements: large- 2 pts, mini- 2 pts. NOVICE: First blue ribbon in Gran Prix - move to regular classes; points thereafter will still count as novice.
